UMNO AGM Umno risks losing votes from the Felda settlers if the government does not address their woes, a delegate from Pahang has warned.

Maran Umno division deputy chief Shahaniza Shamsuddin said one of these issues was the rationalisation of cooking oil subsidies.

"When (Felda settlers) open their doors, there are oil palm trees, but when they open their kitchen cupboards, there is no oil for their daily use," she told the Umno general assembly.

The government recently removed subsidies for most cooking oil products, with only 1kg palm oil packets still being subsidised.

Shahaniza said other issues included delayed payments for oil palm sale and housing problems among the youths in Felda settlements.

"Felda voters who have always been behind the government in past elections are likely to cast protest votes if these are not dealt with before the 14th general election," Shahaniza said.

The Pahang state exco member noted that in last year's Rompin by-election, BN lost in two Felda voting districts.

Overall, she said, there are 54 Parliament seats in the Felda areas, of which the opposition won six during the last election.

"If the opposition adds another 23 Parliament seats from Felda areas, then the era of BN rule led by Umno will end," Shahaniza added.

Therefore, the Kuala Sentul assemblyperson called on Umno to discard its denial syndrome, and stop thinking that it is fine to win with just a single vote.

Malaysia practices the first-past-the-post system, in which even a one vote majority is enough to secure victory, she said.
