Estranged opposition and Independent lawmakers set aside their differences today to sign a petition protesting the arrest of three MPs over the Bersih rally.

Among those who signed the petition was former Selangor menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim, and PAS MPs Siti Zailah Mohd Yusof, Nik Mazian Nik Mohamad, Ahmad Baihaki Atiqullah, Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli and Mahfuz Omar.

They were among 44 lawmakers who signed the petition addressed to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Other signatories included Parti Warisan Sabah president Shafie Apdal.

The petition said the arrest of DAP’s Anthony Loke and PKR’s Tian Chua and Zuraida Kamaruddin over the Bersih rally was a violation of their rights to free speech and to assemble as guaranteed by the federal constitution.

Tian and Zuraida - who were arrested after the Bersih rally - were released today

Tian even returned to Parliament hours after his release.

Loke, who was detained in the pre-Bersih dragnet on Friday however is still under detention.

Khalid and PAS have been at odds with the rest of the opposition since the dissolution of Pakatan Rakyat.

Khalid has voted in favour of BN bills, while PAS has mostly chosen to abstain from such votes.
