PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has condemned Putrajaya for applying the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) to detain Bersih leader Maria Chin Abdullah.

Tuan Ibrahim said the use of the security law to detain Maria without trial was "wrong" and "excessive".

"The government had promised that unlike the Internal Security Act, Sosma and other laws will not be abused for political purposes and matters that has nothing to do with national security.

"PAS has consistently opposed any form of cruelty and abuse of power," said Tuan Ibrahim.

He urged the authorities to release Maria immediate and learn from their previous mistake when attempting to apply Sosma on government critics Khairuddin Abu Hassan and Matthias Chang.

The duo were charged under Section 124L of the Penal Code for attempted sabotage, read together with Sosma, which allows lengthy detention without bail.

Eventually, the court disallowed their detention under Sosma and they are now free on bail.

Maria was arrested under Sosma following a police raid on Bersih's office on Friday.

Bersih is investigated under Section 124c of the Penal Code for attempts to carry out activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

Apart from Bersih, police are also investigating news portal Malaysiakini and the Bar Council under Section 124C with regard to the OSF funds.
