Selangor PKR welcomed the statement by PAS that the party is open to ensuring one-on-one fights against the BN in the next general election.

"The one-on-one strategy has been PKR's stand since early on to ensure the opposition's march to Putrajaya is realised," Selangor PKR information chief Shuhaimi Shafiei in a statement today.

He noted a recent study by the Selangor government think-tank, Darul Ehsan Institute, which found that one-on-one fights would benefit the opposition.

The study indicated that the opposition coalition has a 59 percent chance of winning if its parties agree to one-on-one fights in GE14, compared with only a 29 percent chance if they face multi-cornered fights.

Shuhaimi said the victories of the opposition coalition in Selangor, Kelantan and Penang should not be squandered.

"The peoples' governments there must be defended with unity and cooperation at all levels, including in Kelantan and Penang," he said.

Shuhaimi urged all opposition parties to welcome PAS' olive branch and work towards discussion on setting one-on-one fights for the next general election, to ensure that they take on the BN at full strength.

He hoped the rakyat would welcome and support the alternative government that PKR, along with DAP, Amanah, PAS, Bersatu and other parties from Sabah and Sarawak, can offer.

"It is this unity that is both our strength and a weapon most feared by Umno and BN," he added.

Last week, PAS Murshidul Am Hashim Jasin said the party is open to cooperation with other opposition parties, in order to ensure a one-on-one fight against the BN in GE14.

Since then, other PAS leaders have came out clarifying that they would not talk about any cooperation with parties that do not respect Islam or have a history of conflict with the Islamic party.

This effectively rules out Amanah, a PAS splinter that parted ways with PAS in an unfriendly situation, and the DAP, which the Islamic party has repeatedly labelled as anti-Islam.
