Wall Street Journal journalist Rachel Pannett was ejected from an briefing session on 1MDB in Sydney because she "gate crashed" the event, said programme moderator Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz.

"Shame on her. At least have the courtesy to check with organisers first," the Jasa strategic communications director said on Twitter.

"Learn to be more civilised. You claim to have first class mentality, so you can't possibly be gate crashing," he quipped.

Pannett, who is WSJ Sydney bureau deputy chief, said she was booted out of the "public" event yesterday.

Her colleague Tom Wright said only Malaysian students were allowed to ask questions.

The WSJ has widely reported on the 1MDB scandal.

According to DAP's Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua, the event featuring 1MDB president Arul Kanda Kandasamy was hosted at the University of New South Wales.

Jasa, a department of the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, has organised multiple information sessions for students at public universities in Malaysia.

These events are closed-door functions, featuring Arul Kanda as the only speaker and a moderator from Jasa to facilitate the talk.

This had led some students at Universiti Malaya (UM) to hold up placards in protest when the event was held at their university on Oct 11, much to the chagrin of Tun Faisal.

The student group UM Association of New Youth (Umany) slammed the event as a one-sided "brainwashing session".

The then Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia pro-tem committee member Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman also complained of being barred from the UM event, after being told that it was open to UM students only.
