The body of the man who jumped off the Second Penang bridge on Wednesday, after purportedly posting a suicide note on Facebook, has been found today.

In the lengthy suicide note which went viral, Mohd Sukri Saad, 38, said that he was being oppressed by a “cruel government”, adding that he was to be charged for selling RM360 worth of contraband cigarettes.

Facing possible jail time and hefty fines, the man admitted that though he was guilty, the punishment was far too heavy for the crime.

He also compared his crime to a “director who stole millions and yet was freed on bail”.

Though he was supposed to appear in court on Wednesday, he said he decided against it as he has no more money and is shouldering a lot of burden.

Instead, he said, he is choosing to sacrifice himself for the “oppressed” rakyat, even though he knows he might be condemned and criticised for this choice.

“I have no choice, fellow rakyat. Last night, I couldn’t sleep at all.

“I can’t bear to go to jail... I can’t bear to burden other people by borrowing money from them.

“At first, I chose to go to jail, but my children will be known as the children of a convict,” he said in the note, subsequently asking for forgiveness from his wife and children.

Towards the end of the note, he also implored PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang not to be tricked by Umno, claiming that the ruling party is only pretending to support Hadi’s private member’s bill seeking to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.

“Don’t be tricked by Umno’s leadership, they’re just pretending to support the your bill so that the opposition will be fractured.

“Go back to the opposition so that you’ll become a strong opposition, so that the fates of rakyat like myself will be protected.

“Once you've become the ruling government, you will control the media and it will be easy to convince the rakyat about your bill,” he said.

The note went viral on social media, being reproduced and shared by many people on Facebook, including Amanah’s Salor assemblyperson Husam Musa, who said Parliament should have a special motion on Sukri’s death.

Authorities said the body was found at 9.02am today, about one nautical mile from where he was supposed to have jumped.

According to Fire and Rescue Operations Commander Isharuddin Ismail, the body has been sent to Sungai Bakap Hospital for an autopsy.

Sukri’s motorcycle, slippers and handphone were found on Wednesday morning by the side of the bridge on the island-bound side, sparking off search operations by the Fire and Rescue Department.
