Mid Valley Megamall has apologised over a rat incident at a branch of Komugi within its premises and has unveiled a slew of pest control measures.

"With regards to the incident in Komugi on Oct 23, the Mid Valley Megamall management would like to apologise to our customers for the distressing experience," it said in a Facebook post today.

The management said the bakery has been shut down for thorough cleaning and review of operational procedures but the mall's own procedures are also being reviewed.

"In light of the incident, we are reviewing the efficacy of our procedures and with immediate effect, will be strengthening our existing measures," it said.

It said among the measures would be doubling the frequency of inspections and treatments, on top of existing procedures.

It will also increase the frequency of food-handling and hygiene training for the staff of all tenants and step up consultations and dialogues with the authorities.

"The well-being of our shoppers and visitors remain our utmost priority. We strive to maintain a safe and comfortable shopping environment for all," it said.

Yesterday, a customer at a Komugi outlet uploaded a photograph on Facebook showing a rat munching on the outlet's freshly-baked bread on a tray.

The Facebook post quickly went viral and courted shocked responses.

Komugi had since apologised for the incident and ordered the outlet to be closed pending investigation.

It stressed that this was an isolated incident.

The incident had also raised concerns about the general cleanliness of the mall.

In the Facebook statement, the mall's management said, at present, tenants are already engaging regular licensed pest control services.

It added that there are also supplemental licensed pest control services by the mall for tenants' premises.

Monthly pest control measures in common areas of the mall by external third party-licensed contractors are also carried out while activities such as rodent control and spraying of larvicide are done on a weekly basis, it added.

The mall's management said monthly hygiene inspections are also conducted for all food outlets and food operators also have received regular hygiene education.

It added that full cooperation is given to health authorities who come for inspections on a regular basis and coordinated pest control with surrounding buildings is also conducted.
