Electoral reform coalition Bersih has blasted Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos for the red shirts protestors attack on a yellow-clad participant yesterday in Sabak Bernam.

"They could have killed him. Jamal Yunos has crossed the line and such actions tantamount to thuggery and it is criminal and violence of the worst degree," said Bersih in a statement this morning.

The group condemned the incidents of violence seen in yesterday's confrontations between Bersih participants on their nationwide convoy, and the pro-government red shirts led by Jamal.

"In particular, a Bersih supporter was physically beaten up by these group of thugs.

"The gangsters egged him, pulled him off his bike, kicked and punched him with such force that it injured him badly," said the coalition.

Yesterday Bersih went on its third nationwide convoy to drum up awareness for the Bersih 5 rally on Nov 19, which calls for electoral and institutional reforms beginning with Prime Minister Najib Razak's resignation.

The convoys from six locations in several states saw regular run-ins with the opposing red shirts, with the confrontation in Sabak Bernam, Selangor seeing considerable violence against the yellow-clad Bersih participants.

In his own statement today, Jamal complained the police yesterday purportedly gave Bersih participants "special treatment" in contrast to the treatment his red shirts members received.

'Intimidation unacceptable'

Bersih meanwhile said the red shirts not only attacked physically, they almost rammed into the cars of Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham in Teluk Intan, former Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga and Bersih manager Mandeep Singh in the outskirts of Sabak Bernam.

"Such intimidation cannot be accepted. The police must arrest them to end gangsterism," said Bersih.

"Bersih maintains its stand that we uphold non-violence and respect peaceful assembly," it added.

The group said they will continue with their convoys to raise awareness for the five demands of Bersih.

"We call on every Malaysians to continue to demand for reforms and a better Malaysia."
