PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has confirmed Pakatan Harapan will be taking the Election Commission (EC) to court over its proposed redelineation exercise.

“We will not only oppose the redelineation, we will sue the EC,” said Nurul Izzah to applause from the audience.

“We will ensure that this is our last frontier,” she added.

She was speaking at the Federal Territories Parti Amanah Negara’s (Amanah) one-year anniversary celebrations last night.

The Lembah Pantai MP claimed the redelineation exercise would see BN regain its two-thirds majority in Parliament.

“Some say, do not scare the rakyat with this. But to me, the rakyat should be scared.

“If prime minister Najib Abdul Razak can now take over the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s powers (with the National Security Council Act, NSC), imagine if BN wins two-thirds majority.

“As British economist (John Maynard) Keynes once said, ‘We are all dead in the long run’,” she said.

Therefore, those who are fed up with ‘Najib and company’ should ensure that they register as voters and do whatever they can to protest against Najib, said Nurul Izzah.

Malaysians, she said, should not waste time by feeling sad. The one who should be sad is PKR de-facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, who is currently incarcerated for his second sodomy conviction.

“But every time he sees us, there’s always a sweet smile on his face. Why?

“You can imprison a person, but for as long as you know you are fighting in the name of truth, you are invincible, insya'allah,” she said.

'EC conspiracy'

Meanwhile, Amanah lawmaker Mohd Hatta Ramli accused the EC of being used by BN to ensure progress achieved by Pakatan Harapan would be upset by undemocratic means, through the redelineation.

As such, Hatta, who is also Federal Territories Amanah chairperson said that Federal Territories Pakatan Harapan will not wait long to object to the redelineation exercise.

“We in Pakatan Harapan will file objections at all constituencies in the Federal Territories including Putrajaya.

“We won’t let the EC have the easy way out by being BN’s yes man. (So) this is where the Pakatan Harapan consensus is needed,” he said.

Meanwhile, DAP acting national chairperson Tan Kok Wai said the redelineation exercise was nothing but a conspiracy between Umno and the EC.

“We heard Umno leaders including the prime minister shedding crocodile tears by saying that Umno is unhappy (over the redelineation).

“Do all of you believe this? This is just theatrics, another lie by Umno-BN,” he said.

DAP, therefore, together with Amanah and PKR will object the redelineation exercise, vowed the Cheras MP.

“And I also call for the EC chairperson (Mohd Hashim Abdullah) to resign (over the redelineation),” he said.

The redelineation exercise officially began on Sept 15, with a one-month period for viewing the proposals and making objections.

The EC’s proposal would see the boundaries of 128 parliamentary constituencies redrawn.

Critics of the exercise say the proposed boundaries would strengthen Umno’s control of Parliament, at the cost of causing greater racial polarisation in Malaysia, as studies show the new boundaries create constituencies that are dominated by one ethnic group or another.
