Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad met with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah yesterday to hand over the Citizens' Declaration.

A source close to Mahathir told Malaysiakini that the meeting took place at the Istana Anak Bukit in Kedah yesterday evening.

"It was a four-eyed meeting between the two... Mahathir went in at about 4.30pm and the meeting lasted about one hour and 15 minutes," the source said.

The source said Mahathir had brought with him the Citizens' Declaration, as well as photos of the 1.3 million documents that the Save Malaysia group claimed were signed by the public.

The declaration, which was an effort undertaken by Umno rebels, the opposition and civil society, calls for institutional reforms, and for the removal of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

It claims that Najib is corrupt, and is leading the country to financial ruin.

Najib has denied such allegations, claiming them to be part of a plot to topple him.

Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has also cleared the prime minister of any wrongdoing in regard to the 1MDB scandal.

Mahathir had previously complained that he was not allowed to see the Agong to hand over the declaration.

The source told Malaysiakini they were informed that the monarch had granted the former prime minister an audience on Wednesday.

He said that Mahathir did not comment on the meeting after he left.
