Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha and his Malaysian counterpart Najib Abdul Razak are set to discuss security cooperation in Bangkok today as part of the latter’s official visit to Thailand.

Measures to combat international terrorism will also be discussed as part of security cooperation amid recent reports of bomb blasts in Thailand’s deep south bordering Malaysia, including the provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.

The most recent attack killed a five-year-old girl and her father in Narathiwat’s Tak Bai district on Tuesday.

Malaysia has assumed the role of the facilitator of peace talks between the Thai government and separatist groups in Thailand’s southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat since February 2013, said Deep South Watch, an NGO based in Pattani.

Among other security-related topics to be discussed are border management, transnational crimes, human trafficking, and cyber security.

The discussion will also include trade investment, tourism cooperation and economic and infrastructure development, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told reporters.

The Malaysian leader’s visit comes one year ahead of the 60th anniversary of the two neighbours’ diplomatic relations.
