ANALYSIS Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has been confirmed by a member of his own cabinet to be the all 'mysterious' Malaysian Official 1 cited by US court documents.

So what? Will the revelation from Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan change anything?

After all, the opposition and any person capable of putting two and two together, have already figured out way back in July, that Najibi is MO1.

And yet nothing much has come out of this admission.

What about Umno and their supporters then? Will this revelation change their views?

The answer appears to be no.

Penang Institute's Wong Chin Huat (photo) reiterated that unless Najib is charged, Umno is unlikely to make a move against him.

"You need someone to fire the first shot in the second round before others may read that things are changing, but no big warlord is doing that yet.

"Backdoor horsetrading may be ongoing, but there is no impetus for a change of direction," Wong told Malaysiakini.

Similarly, Ideas chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan also feels that Rahman’s revelation makes no difference.

However, he said, the implications of Rahman’s claim may prove to be interesting.

"The (Department of Justice's) papers are pointing that Najib received (1MDB) money. So, what will the government do about that?"

Wan Jan said this in reference to the US$731 million in funds, allegedly stolen from 1MDB, that the DOJ claimed MO1 received in his personal bank accounts.

As several observers have noted, this aspect of the DOJ suits have conveniently been ignored by Rahman, who simply said that Najib was not named in the court fillings because he is not part of the case.

And while this won't change Umno's view, many are claiming that Najib is on the way out. He has to be, right? After all the embarassing details of his purported 1MDB involvement?

Analysts however said that this may not happen anytime soon, and both Wan Saiful and Wong concur.

"The rumours are not very strong, I would wait a few more weeks before making any judgment.

"The last time we heard rumours about him being under pressure, he ended up removing people from his cabinet and becoming even stronger," Wan Saiful said.

Wong said Najib would only quit if he could strike a deal to save him and his wife Rosmah Mansor from any prosecution.

"Saving Umno is not Najib's main concern. He will only step down if Dr Mahathir Mohamad agrees to a deal that keeps him from jail and his wealth with him. I doubt this will happen."

A helpful indicator of Najib going down, Wong added, would be Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin's stance.

"As long as Khairy still plays as loyalist, Najib will largely be safe," Wong said, claiming that Khairy would be the first to abandon the prime minister if he was about to go down.

Najib has denied allegations of misusing public funds, dismissing them as part of a plot to topple him.

Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has also cleared Najib of any criminal misconduct.

The AG has also said that there is no evidence of 1MDB money ever being misappropriated.
