The Penang state government’s decision to cancel holding a snap state election is proof of the spirit of consensus upheld by Pakatan Harapan.

Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming pointed out how the snap election was cancelled due to PKR’s disagreement with the proposal.

“This proves that the Pakatan Harapan agreement inked in 2015 is binding on all parties, be it DAP, PKR or Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah)," Nga said in a statement.

“Based on the agreement, all decisions on policies must obtain the agreement of all three parties and DAP has shown how it heeds the agreement. This good example must be appreciated and should be followed by all component parties in the future."

Nga also took a shot at the BN, pointing out that the decision to drop the snap election proposal has proven how Pakatan Harapan was different from the ruling coalition.

“For BN, Umno makes the final decision, without consulting or paying attention to the views of the other 12 component parties and this includes allowing the Private Member’s Bill from PAS (on hudud) to be presented," he said.

Nga said the practice of obtaining prior consensus would also increase the rakyat’s confidence in Harapan.

“I urge the Pakatan Harapan secretariat to swiftly formulate shared policies and to organise programmes for the three parties so that Pakatan Harapan will be strengthened from the grassroots level up to the central level,” he said.

DAP had decided to hold a snap election in Penang to gauge public support for the party and for Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who was on June 30 slapped with two corruption charges.

Yesterday, Lim announced that DAP has decided to abandon plans to hold the snap election.

Lim had maintained that the final decision would depend on a consensus among Pakatan Harapan partners.
