Bersih has yet to reach a decision on whether to hold another mammoth rally, dubbed Bersih 5, in the coming weeks.

"We haven't reached a conclusion, we still need more consultation," Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah told Malaysiakini when contacted last night.

She was speaking after a closed-door meeting between the electoral watchdog and NGOs regarding the possibility of doing another street protest in Kuala Lumpur.

Asked about the mood of the meeting, Maria declined to comment. It is understood that there are some disagreements among Bersih members over working with former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his Save Malaysia movement.

Mahathir, a polarising figure who is seeking the ouster of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, has been blamed by some NGO activists as the source of the many problems faced by the country today.

Maria had last week said that a rally was on the cards in the wake of civil lawsuits filed by the US's Department of Justice (DOJ) to seize assets amounting to US$1 billion bought with funds allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the rally cannot be held if its aim is to topple Najib, whom critics say was implicated in the DOJ suits.

Bersih’s most recent rally, Bersih 4, attracted tens of thousands of people who gathered in the city centre on Aug 29 and 30 last year.

In the 34-hour rally, the protesters demanded for clean and fair elections, among others.

Bersih's first rally was in 2007 and this was followed by three others - in 2011, 2012 and 2015.
