Is Najib the victor or a dead man walking?

HaveAGreatDay: Koon Yew Yin, I share not your optimism with respect to that ex-dictator's new party. But I would be very happy if I were proven wrong.

I feel the best hope for the truth to emerge with respect to the 1MDB scandal is for investigators overseas to finally unlock the locks behind which the secrets have been deposited.

Sarawakian: I fully agree with you, Koon. Pakatan Harapan cannot take down Umno/BN without the Malay votes. Amanah is broke and Islamist. The results of the by-elections show that they cannot secure the Malay votes and the Chinese votes only with difficulty.

I predict that the Dr Mahathir Mohamad group will be a much stronger partner. With his anti-Islamist history and anti-1MDB stand, Dr M’s group will be fully accepted by the Chinese. They will surely have access to unlimited funds, too.

I feel the Malays want to get rid of Najib Abdul Razak but they worry about the loss of Malay privileges if Umno/BN lose.

Pre-election surveys during the by-elections showed a very high percentage of undecided BN voters until the very last minute. The Dr M group will be able to win over those undecided Malay voters.

Pakatan Harapan would be far, far better off with the Dr M group than trying to woo PAS, which I think would be a lost cause. The best scenario to come out in GE14 would be PAS and BN being wiped out. Dare we hope?

Anonymous 1890491455255851: I really hope Koon is right. We already know from the recent two past by-elections, the urbanites do not support the BN government.

It is the rural folk that need to be made to see how the government we have is made up of self-serving individuals who have no qualms about doing whatever it takes to stay in power, even at the expense of all our rights and the peace and harmony we used to enjoy as a multiracial nation.

Anonymous Hotplate: Koon, you have said the right thing. There should be a grand coalition in Malaysia against cancerous BN - irrespective of race, which party is strong, who will be leading - if we want to gain the voters confidence to kick out the corrupt ruling regime that doesn't care for the people and the nation, but cares for position and power, money and provoking racial and religious issues to confuse the people.

The grand coalition should be very strong to put fear in the boot-licking authorities and most high-ranking civil servants that earning allegedly corrupt money is not everything, but people's trust is important to uphold democracy.

Hank Marvin: Thanks for raising our hopes, Koon. The problem with us now is PAS, which keeps supporting Najib, but at the same time remains in the opposition.

SSG: I take issue with you, Koon, when you mentioned Singapore in the same sentence as the US/Switzerland investigations. I do not trust the authorities in Singapore at all. Only the US and Swiss authorities do I trust.

In my considered opinion the Singapore Monetary Authority acted only when the US/Swiss authorities were already in advanced stages of their investigation, and only when this corruption scandal had become widely known and could not be swept under the carpet any more did they make a ‘show’ of acting with such vigour. Then, only against one bank.

They allegedly only want their lily-white reputation to remain intact with the US authorities, on whom they depend on for protection in case of a ‘foreign invasion’. In Donald Trump's words, they are called “free riders”.

Ong Seng Swee: There are three reasons why all opposition coalitions had failed to win against Umno/BN. 1. The RTM1/TV3 news. 2. The Umno branches’ machinery. 3. The government machinery given goodies/cash during elections. These are feel-good factors for BN.

The opposition must: 1. Create better news dissemination. Malaysiakini is only as good as reaching 10 percent of the village (kampung) folk. 2. Thinking of and finding ways to reach the Malay community who are educated. 3. Avoiding being exploited on racial issues since TV3/RTM1 spreads news fast.

Dahjadi Bubur: An old man unjustly in jail (he was a young man 10 years ago) had the foresight and vision to urge ‘Reformasi’, but the leader and nation have forfeited and forsaken the window of opportunity to change for the better.

The deeper into the hole, the harder it will be to pull yourself out, while others are already out and flying skywards. Save Malaysia is becoming highly impossible because it is long gone.

Senior: I believe:

1) Umno is no longer for Malays, only for Umnoputeras.

2) With the National Security Council (NSC) Act there will be no GE14, and also BN must stay in power or the alleged pirate will go behind bars.

3) The alleged pirate is in control now, but he who laughs last, laughs best.

Donkey Kong: So what if he did all that was alleged? Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe did more and is still surviving quite well. It’s stupid to think that Najib would fall.

Headhunter: As the saying goes, God works in mysterious ways. As far as 1MDB is concerned, we have not seen the end of it yet, not by a long shot.

At least four countries are digging into the mess and when it comes, it will be like a tonne of bricks.

Not only the main perpetrators but also those who try to cover up the dirt will be exposed for their complicity.

We could perhaps see at least two dozen high-level government officials and ministers going to jail for their involvement.
