Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali has condemned the attack in Nice, France, last night that has claimed up to 80 dead and at least 100 injured.

"Whatever may be the reason or cause, these acts of carnage can never be justified.

"While the attacker – the truck driver – has been killed, the presence of other weapons and explosives points to a pattern of terrorist acts which are being perpetrated across the world, often in the name of Islam.

"Let us remain firm in condemnation of these heinous crimes and reject the notion that they can ever be justified in the name of Islam," the PKR deputy president said in a statement this morning.

The attack is being investigated by French anti-terrorism authorities. However, those behind the massacre have yet to be identified.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that some supporters of Islamic State (IS) were celebrating the incident on the social media.

Azmin said while no group has yet claimed responsibility, "the perpetrators of these barbaric and merciless acts are the enemies of Islam".

He said he condemned in the strongest terms the "horrendous attack".

"The principle of moderation and justice must prevail and we must stay resolute in our fight against the scourge of terrorism.

"My prayers go out to the victims and their families in this outrageous act of mass murder," Azmin added.
