‘Tuan Ibrahim’s truce proposal a step in the right direction’

Iiiizzzziiii: Perhaps the main point has been overlooked. How can you form a pact with a political party who puts its God and religion before you?

This is not the first time an electoral pact had been formed and this will not be the last either. They can join together to fight a common enemy, but when the common foe has been vanquished, what then?

What will happen to the non-Muslim minorities? Another round of hudud and perhaps other ridiculous decrees? PAS political platform and objective is out there for all to see and it can never change.

You can compromise over many things, but it is extremely difficult to compromise on one's God and religion. Perhaps that is the reason why politics and religion are never a good mix.

So, when you go into politics, do you aspire to be a statesman or being reduced to an opportunist because of circumstances and situations?

Kawak: The main obstacle to this noble proposal by PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man is none other than PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and his pro-Umno clerics.

With their strong influence in the party, this electoral pact may not happen.

Zambri Mahmud: Indeed, Tuan Ibrahim has no final say. That prerogative belongs to Hadi Awang. Hadi would veto any proposal to link up with the opposition.

This is because PAS will act as spoiler in the elections to let Umno win. An understanding has probably been reached to let this happen.

Anonymous_40f4: As long as Hadi is PAS president, it will be easy for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to manipulate PAS for Umno Baru-BN to win elections.

Najib will keep playing politics with hudud to 'excite' PAS and Hadi to break up the opposition parties.

But what is more important is whether a united opposition subscribes to principles and values which will ensure Malaysia will evolve into a truly democratic state where there will be equal opportunities for all, where meritocracy is practised, religious freedom is allowed, corruption in government is eradicated, religious extremism will not be tolerated.

Where race should not be a criterion for jobs in government and university placements, freedom of peaceful assembly is allowed, and freedom of speech is permitted, etc.

If the opposition can agree on these values, only then can they be confident of forming a new government with the people's mandate.

Anonymous Hotplate: It is good and very wise to have a strong opposition electoral pact, but not with PAS again for goodness sake, especially with Hadi. Please don't make a mistake again.

Those PAS leaders/members who wish to work with Harapan should join Parti Amanah Negara.

PAS is past and a gone case, so PAS leaders/members should just quit the party and join Amanah, which is also an Islam-based party.

AntiRacial: Yes, Pakatan Harapan should only consider PAS' appeal to a ceasefire provided Hadi is out from PAS as he cannot be trusted.

He has already backstabbed Pakatan once. Hadi is a pain and will continuously be a pain for Harapan.

Otherwise, Harapan is going to hand GE14 to BN. I am so tired of listening/reading about PAS' lies over and over again.

If PAS is back in Harapan, I will not vote for them for the rest of my life.

When the hudud bill and elections come around, it will be back to the old game where PAS would not compromise its earlier stand which is clear as glass.

Amanah and PKR must get its act together. They need to be united to go to the grassroots/rural areas to increase their support; if not, we will have the same scenario as Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar.

DAP will also have to get its act together and not dream on its fixed deposit 'Chinese votes'. Its supporters are getting disillusioned and the party also needs to work hard to convince the 30 percent of the voters who sit on the fence. Sacrifices and hard work lie ahead.

The Analyser: I would disagree totally with this comment made by Merdeka Centre executive director Ibrahim Suffian. All too often, Malaysia thinks that recycling rubbish is the way to the future.

All of the political parties involved are failures, and they have failed through their own shortcomings.

Does Ibrahim really think that by simply reorganising these failures miraculously something magical will happen and they will immediately shed their religious biases, gain some empathy with the people of Malaysia, shed their selfishness that has been with them since childhood and overcome the insecurities that lead to their selfishness and greed?

Then suddenly they will morph into a democratic, religion-free, egalitarian political party with the prosperity of the whole nation in mind and the advocacy of human rights for all?
