Penang DAP has announced that the solidarity fund it launched for Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will cease collecting money.

State DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow said the party has achieved its target, surpassing the RM1 million mark since it launched the campaign at 5pm yesterday.

"We have collected RM1,009,000 as at 2pm today," Chow said at a press conference today.

DAP launched the donation drive after its secretary-general was slapped with two corruption charges in the High Court in Penang yesterday.

The party had liquidated its funds to pay for Lim's bail.

State DAP leaders at the press conference stood up and bowed to show their appreciation to their donors and sponsors for helping the party reach its target.

Chow also responded to public query on why DAP started the donation campaign when the bail money was refundable.

"For 50 years, DAP has relied on the kindness of concerned citizens for public donations and contributions to keep our operations going.

"No one knows when the trial will come to an end (and) when the bail money will be refunded," Chow said.

He said the money collected will be immediately channelled towards the party fund, which will be used for the 'Solidarity with Guan Eng' campaign.

The money would also be used for the upcoming 14th general election, Chow added.

Meanwhile, Wong Hon Wai, Lim's political secretary, announced that the party will be organising two solidarity events this Sunday.

"A walk with Guan Eng event will be held at 8am, at Beach Street, followed by a briefing at Dewan Sri Pinang, Penang, at 10am this Sunday," Wong said.

Lim was arrested on Wednesday, after chairing the state executive council meeting, and the bail of RM1 million was posted in the High Court yesterday.

The two charges against the chief minister are related to him approving a plot of land for re-zoning to benefit businesswoman Phang Li Koon, and his purchase of a bungalow on Jalan Pinhorn from Phang at below the market value.

Lim claimed trial and the case has been fixed for mention on Sept 22.
