With PAS pulling off stunts normally seen in Malay nationalist organisations, Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali is unsure if he is being outdone.

Commenting on the display of a giant keris by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang at the party's muktamar (general assembly), Ibrahim said Perkasa too possessed a long keris but was uncertain whose is longer.

"I don't know if PAS or Perkasa's keris is longer because Perkasa's keris is also long," he joked at a press conference at the Perkasa headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

While noting the stunts were similar to those in Perkasa, Ibrahim suggested that PAS took a step further to avoid direct comparison with the right-wing Malay rights group.

"There are people who say PAS copied Perkasa, that may be the case, I can't deny that.

"If PAS (members) wear normal Malay attire, they may be accused of copying Perkasa. If they used a short keris, people may say they copy Perkasa.

"So they decided to up the ante," he said.

PAS had raised eyebrows at its muktamar in Kelantan last week when its senior leaders donned Malay warrior attire.

Hadi also took the spotlight when he used a two-metre long giant keris to cut a glutinous rice cake in the form of the party's flag.

Ibrahim suggested that the stunts were due to PAS trying to over-compensate after it supposedly abandoned the Malays when it worked with DAP under the now defunct Pakatan Rakyat.

"When PAS was in Pakatan Rakyat, PAS lost its identity because it was close to DAP.

"So, when PAS separated from DAP, PAS wants back the trust of the Malay Muslims and it champions Islam for the Malays.

"To convince them, PAS wears like Malay warrior and carry the keris," he said.

The PAS muktamar last week was the party's first after quitting Pakatan Harapan and forming the third bloc with Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia.
