MUKTAMAR PAS supporters’ wing delegate G Balachandran has slammed the critics of PAS’ Private Member’s Bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.

He also ticked off MIC president Dr S Subramaniam for being a ‘weak’ leader who does not understand the bill.

Balachandran insisted that the bill is only meant to strengthen the syariah courts and not to enact hudud law.

Nevertheless, he said, the bill was widely seen by non-Muslims as a move to enact hudud law.

“That’s why when the MIC president threatened to resign, for me that is (a sign of) a weak leader.

“If he has trouble (understanding it) he can call us. We can teach him,” he told delegates today while debating the president’s speech at the 62nd muktamar in Kota Baru.

Balachandran added that PAS’ strength did not come from the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat coalition, but from Islam.

He said PAS is a party based on divine revelations.

“They don’t understand PAS’ intentions. That it is a party based on revelations – on the Quran and the Sunnah.

“We have two divisions, namely politics and proselytisation,” he said.

He added that PAS' struggles were not based on race like Umno, but on religion instead.
