PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail still believes there is room for negotiations with PAS in relation to the upcoming by-elections.

She said this when asked to comment on Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) urging PKR not to waste time on this since PAS would not budge from its position.

"For me, we still have time left before nomination day (June 5) and the by-elections (June 18). There is still room to discuss.

"We have to discuss for the people's sake, we have to think more about the people," she told reporters when met at the Parliament lobby this evening.

Asked if this meant she would continue with discussions, she replied: "Yes, of course. It is important when you are going for elections. There is still time to manouvere for the betterment of the people."

Quizzed on whether she believes the talks would be successful, Wan Azizah said: "We can try."

Earlier, Amanah communication director Khalid Samad told reporters that discussions with PAS would not yield any results.

He said this is because PAS is confident that it could win the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar seats on its own strength without assistance from others.

Furthermore, he added that PAS considers the two parliament constituencies as its traditional seats.

Khalid said Amanah was prepared to represent Pakatan Harapan and contest both the seats as it believes PKR would face difficulties in doing so.

The negotiations are being held to ensure straight fights with BN, as three-corner battles would split the votes in favour of the ruling coalition.

It was also revealed that Amanah, a PAS splinter party, had short-listed its president Mohamad Sabu for the Sungai Besar seat.

The by-elections were called following the deaths of Noriah Kasnon (Sungai Besar MP) and Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad (Kuala Kangsar MP).

The two were among six people who perished in a helicopter crash during the recent state election campaign period in Sarawak.
