S'WAK POLLS PAS candidates in northern Sarawak have rubbished notions that the party is ‘extremist’.

"If we are extremists we won't contest in the state election. We will just bomb everything," said the PAS candidate for the Pujut seat, Jofrie Jaraiee.

Jofrie said this when commenting on his decision to contest in Pujut, a Chinese-majority seat.

He said he has been a resident of Miri all his life and is confident of his chances, especially since it is a four-cornered fight between him, DAP, BN and an independent.

Jofrie believes BN's Hii King Chiong would also be facing a difficult fight and that the former UPP man was not likely to get help or support from his SUPP counterparts in Miri.

He said that race was not an issue in Miri, and is confident that Pujut residents would be open to his plans to unite all of them regardless of race and religion.

"Maybe they'll vote for the candidate who can serve the best, instead of the party," he said at a press conference in Miri today.

Meanwhile, PAS candidate for the semi-urban seat of Lambir, Arifiriazul Paijo, is also confident of his chances against BN and PKR.

"Every party has its fixed supporters, so we (PAS) are going after those people who are on the fence," Arifiriazul said.

He said PAS has been active in Lambir since 2012, and even bagged more than 7,000 votes for the Sibuti parliamentary constituency in the 2013 general election.

The party lost the Sibuti seat to BN then by a 6,000-vote majority.

PAS is contesting 11 seats throughout Sarawak, and president Abdul Hadi Awang has expressed confidence that the Islamist party will be able to get its first Sarawakian assemblyperson elected on May 7.
