Islamist propaganda now romanticises that the 'insurgency' in Iraq is directed by Muslims and Iraqis nationalists against the Coalition's forces for the noble cause of 'national liberation'.
Nothing is further from the truth. We must be clear in our mind as to the true nature of the violence in Iraq. It is an essentially terrorist campaign mounted by some remnants of the Sunni-Baathist elite who fear completely losing their oppressive powers and corrupt privileges they were used to as a ruling class in a Shiite-majority country.
Their targets are therefore not only Coalition forces only but also the Shiites, the Kurds and the majority of the Sunnis who are for a new and democratic Iraq.
Under their previous reign, these Sunni-Baathist elite were proven oppressors and torturers of all those who were perceived to threaten their power including secular elements in the population.
So the terrorist campaign in Iraq is not a progressive movement of national liberation. It is a criminal conspiracy put in operation by a relatively tiny group of reactionary desperados attempting to restore a genocidal tyranny.
