Desperate attacks on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak only prove his innocence, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said.

"The more you make allegations, it's obvious you are confirming the prime minister is innocent because you are desperate," Azalina told reporters outside the Parliament lobby today.

She was commenting on the recent Australian news reports that have been critical of Najib.

Azalina said Malaysians, particularly Umno members, were not gullible enough to believe the reports, and that she believes there is a hidden motive to remove Najib.

She added that the reports were also insensitive.

"How would they feel if TV3 or Astro did a documentary about their leadership?" Azalina asked.

The Pengerang MP said if a similar documentary had been done about Singapore's leadership, it may fray diplomatic ties.

Letter supports Najib's innocence

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) had in a documentary and online news reports alleged that a Saudi prince pledged hundreds of millions of US dollars to Najib between 2011 and 2013.

It published a letter purportedly from the prince on one of the transactions, in which Najib was given a gift of US$375 million.

Azalina said the letter supported Najib's insistence that he is innocent.

"Of course, for me if I look at the letter, that's the first letter that I'm seeing. I look at the letter, I see it to be cleared," she said.

Najib has consistently denied allegations of corruption.
