The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) might meet its demise if Donald Trump is elected as the next president of the United States, said International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamad.

Mustapa said this is because the US Congress under Trump, who is against the TPPA, might decide to spike the multinational free trade agreement.

"We don't want to make predictions, but if (Trump becomes president)... Then the TPPA might meet its demise," Mustapa told the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said this is because the TPPA has a clause requiring the participation of the US.

"Without the US it would not mean much anyway," he added.

This was said while wrapping up the debate on the Agong's royal address last week.

When asked by Tian Chua (PKR-Batu) on whether Malaysia would accept an amendments to the TPPA proposed by the US Congress, Mustapa replied in the negative.

The TPPA is said to be hallmark of outgoing US president Barack Obama's administration.

Malaysia together with 11 other nations inked the deal in January after years of secretive negotiations.

Trump, who is considered a frontrunner in the upcoming US presidential elections, has said that the TPPA puts the US at a disadvantage.
