Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Ahmad Maslan said he is confident that the Citizens' Declaration initiated by former premier Mahathir Mohamad will fail.

He said this was because BN would not keep quiet in the face of a campaign against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

"Their efforts will fail even as they continue to strive. It does not mean that the BN will just keep quiet," said Ahmad during a press conference at the Umno headquarters in PWTC, Kuala Lumpur today.

Last Friday, Mahathir led a group of over 50 citizens, including DAP's Lim Kit Siang and PKR's Selangor menteri besar Azmin Ali, in signing a declaration calling for the removal of Najib from office by legal means.

Other signatories to what has been touted as an historic event included former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir and former MCA chief Ling Liong Sik.

Commenting further, Ahmad claimed that whatever that is being done, even with Mahathir's cooperation, the opposition will not go far and that Umno and BN will continue to administer the nation.

"Since long ago the opposition promoted their 'Save Malaysia'. In the end, BN still won the 12th and 13th general elections," he said.

However, Ahmad said that he will take the informational approach of continuing to inform the rakyat of the matter.

"We will explain to the rakyat through informational programmes by Umno information chief Annuar Musa and using social media under my purview," said the Umno IT bureau chief.

'Malaysia is the safest country'

Ahmad also claimed that all the contents of the declaration has actually been addressed by the government.

"I have read it and the majority (of the contents) has been answered on various platforms, but they just do not want to agree with the answers given.

"There has been soo many positive things that have been done by the PM since 2009, and it is this that we shall spread instead," he said further.

Earlier at the same press conference, Ahmad announced the formation of the "Keyboard Warriors", a coalition of ten pro-Umno NGOs which will engage the public in the social media to explain current issues.

Meanwhile, as the press conference was ongoing, a representative from Sahabat Ulil Amei of the Keyboard Warriors coalition, Ibrahim Asyaari, asked reporters if they thought that Malaysia is a safe country.

"You don't have to bring the matter up. I have been to the entire world. Malaysia is the safest country," he said.

Indeed, Ibrahim said, those who think that Malaysia is not safe can leave the country.

"If you think Malaysia is not safe, it is better for you to leave the country," he said at the conclusion of the press conference.
