Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar is seeing red over a Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) event, which he claims is trying to revive communism.

The event in question is a crash course on Marxism set to be held next month.

"This is an attempt to revive communist ideologies. Police will not allow this course to be held; the organiser will be called," Khalid tweeted today.

PSM central committee member S Arutchelvan, however, denied such assertions.

"We have no intention to revive communism or the communist party," he told Malaysiakini , adding that this was an attempt to distract from issues plaguing the country such as the tumbling economy.

Arutchelvan said Marxism is not communism, and the course actually touched on the failures of communism in other parts of the world.

He added that the course ( pix ) was also about the downsides of capitalism, which PSM as a registered socialist party is clearly against.

Arutchelvan also reminded Khalid that the government had tried to accuse PSM of attempting to revive communism before.

"But we sued them (government) and won an out-of-court settlement, and they had to pay us RM200,000," he said.

He was referring to the EO6 case , in which six PSM members including Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar were arrested in 2011.

The EO6 were detained for 28 days without specific reasons during a controversial police crackdown on civil rights groups and opposition parties in the run-up to the Bersih 2.0 rally for electoral reform.
