Amid sobs, the driver of the late DAP national chairperson Karpal Singh made an emotional plea for donations to help his sick parents in India.

C Selvam, 29, is unable to find employment as he is awaiting trial over a reckless driving charge in connection with the April 14 accident which killed Karpal and his personal aide Michael Cornelius.

During a press conference at the office of Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan in Penang today, Selvan said his mother, who works as a labourer, only earns about 40 sen per day.

"My father has been ill for the past few months after suffering from a spinal injury," he lamented.

Selvam is currently on bail and under Huan's care.

Huan had posted bail for Selvam on Aug 4, 2014. Prior to that, he was held at the Taiping Prison pending trial.

Karpal's family have stayed away from Selvam citing 'conflict of interest' as the latter's court case is ongoing.

Selvam also expressed concern for his two younger brothers in India with one of them having to quit college in Tamil Nadu due to the lack of financial aid.

Huan said any amount of donation from the public would help Selvam's parents and siblings.

He himself has spent a lot of money caring for Selvam, including renting a room for him in Prai and providing him with food and clothing.

Huan also helped Selvam renew his special pass at the Ipoh Immigration Department which costs RM100 a month.

I had called for a press conference today 11am at my office regarding to C. Selvam (Former Driver of Karpal Singh). First of all, i would like to thank all the press who attended. The case is still on trial. Next hearing will be on the 21st January and 1st February. Sdra Baljit Singh is providing the free legal service.It has been 18 months since C. Selvam is under my care. My responsbility does not end by just bailing him out. His accommodation, food and other welfare also being taken care off. Since bailing him out, i have spent approximately RM 42,000.00.Monthly special pass is required to be applied at Ipoh Immigration Department. So far we had applied 22 special pass. For example, this month alone there were few trips up and down to KL and Kampar. 7th January i had to go to Kampar to apply his special pass, while 9th and 10th i was in KL to reapply his passport. Coming 21st January and 1st February i will be going again to Kampar for his court case and special pass application.The applying of special pass requires me to go to Kampar court to obtain his passport and head to Ipoh Immigration Department. Before returning to Penang, i first need to hand over his passport back to the Kampar Court.Since Selvam is under the Special Pass, he is not allowed to work. Selvam parents are ill back in Vellore, India. Selvam had told me he had expected to be back with his family for Ponggal. His father is ill and his mother and younger brother is their family source of income. His younger sister is studying in government college.I on behalf of C. 'A good man'

“Up until Jan 18, I have spent RM42,000 on Selvam. It is tedious, but I do not mind doing so as Selvan is a good man," Huan said.

Selvam has to be present in court on Jan 21 and Feb 1 for his charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous and reckless driving on July 9, 2014.

He has claimed trial and was granted bail of RM5,000 which he could not afford.

The charge carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or RM20,000 fine or both upon conviction.
