Nine of the 13 Telok Kemang Umno branch leaders who had called for the resignation of party president Najib Razak will face the party's disciplinary tribunal next week.

However, the group leader who had organised the press conference calling for Najib to step down said they are unfazed and will step up efforts to push their agenda.

"We will make arrangements again for a few activities that are larger than this.

"We come today to organise a more comprehensive effort, so that we can bring the movement to every state," said Taman TKK branch chief Kamarul Azman Habibur Rahman

He was speaking at an event tiled 'The Struggle To Democratise Umno' in Puchong last night.

Kamarul is among those who have received letters calling them before a disciplinary tribunal to be held next Wednesday at 2.30pm in Kuala Lumpur.

Kamarul also questioned Umno leaders downplaying such calls for Najib's resignation saying they did not have any effect on their party chief's leadership.

"If it has no effect, then why take action?" he asked

"Note how swiftly they take action, because they are worried about the movement (against Najib)," he said.

Groundwell of discontent?

In addition to Telok Kemang, 34 branches from Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Johor, Perak and Sabah piled pressure on Najib to resign.

Kamarul said this is just the tip of the iceberg, claiming an estimated 800 to 1,000 branches are joining the call.

"It will take a month or two more, and we will prove that we have the power to take him down," he said.

The Coalition of Umno Branch Leaders claiming to represent approximately 200 branches reportedly met yesterday behind closed doors to call for Najib's resignation, expressing disappointment with their party chief.

Malaysiakini understands they attended the meeting in their own capacity and did not inform their branches for fear of reprisals.
