I write to complain about the despicable method of reporting by a prominent local newspaper with regards to rape cases.

Rape cases require extra sensitivity and care in reporting even when the names of the victims or perpetrators are not disclosed. The way that the above two examples were reported were too graphic and offends the sensibilities of decent readers.

No doubt, it serves as a selling point for the less refined among readers. However, a national newspaper should not resort to such style of reporting.

Recently, an expatriate working in my company questioned a colleague of mine regarding a sordid report from the same newspaper. He wondered why such cases were reported in newspapers at all.

It disgusts readers and it does not help console the victims. It does even less to punish the perpetrators. It is merely a cheap selling point. It is utterly dishonourable.
While the newspaper reserves the right to publish such reports in such a way, I would urge it to do away with them entirely and bring back the respect and honour that a national newspaper should deserve.
