Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said a final decision has not been made on restricting the media from covering the party’s annual general assembly next month.

"I never said media blackout. When they asked me this morning, I said I have not decided," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby this evening.

Earlier in the morning, Tengku Adnan said the media would only be allowed to cover daily briefings by vice-presidents Hishammuddin Hussein and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The federal territories minister had also said that he has not decided on whether the restrictions applied to Umno president Najib Abdul Razak’s opening speech, which will be debated by the delegates.

“We are still considering whether to allow it (coverage for Najib’s address) or otherwise. Same goes for his closing speech.

"We will not allow (the press) to wander around. We will not even broadcast what is going on in the halls,” he had said.

Tengku Adnan's latest remarks come after Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Umno leadership was in the dark over the media restrictions.

Tengku Adnan also elaborated on his earlier statement that the media restrictions was because news portals liked to spin the news.

"Certain things when people get the microphone, they will talk a bit off.

"You just pick the one that is a bit off; sometimes they don't mean what they speak and then will hurt races, religion, this is what we don't like," he said.

He added that if the media could behave themselves, he would consider opening up Umno to them again.

Tengku Adnan also denied that the media restrictions had anything to do with 1MDB.

"Where got debate on that? I told you people before. I replied to this a long time ago," he said.
