The Public Accounts Committe should not stop holding press conferences as it is part of its responsibilty to the rakyat, Petaing Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said today.

"I disagree with (suspending press conferences). For one simple reason. The function of PAC is to make the government accountable to all Malaysians. One of the ways to do this is through press conferences.

"It’s PAC's responsibility to keep the rakyat informed on what exactly is happening in government," Pua told reporters at the Parliament lobby.

However, he said, this was his personal view, and that he would not raise the matter with PAC chief Hasan Arifin.

"I have my view, the chairperson has his view," Pua said.

Hasan announced earlier today that PAC would no longer hold press conferences, as he is upset with the media for reporting a quip he made about "cari makan" (earning a living).

The PAC chief had said this when repeatedly grilled on whether the committee would call on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to assist with its investigation into 1MDB.

Hasan said it was not necessary to summon Najib, a point Pua disagrees with.

"The decision should be made within PAC first, before Hasan announced whether we will be summoning the prime minister,” Pua said.

"I am not hopeful on the decision, but I think the prime minister should be summoned because he is the final approval authority for all key transactions in 1MDB."
