DAP's Kampung Tunku state assemblyperson Lau Weng San has urged the Selangor government to absorb the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for services provided by local councils.

Lau said this was because the GST was burdening the bottom 40 percent (B40) and the middle 40 percent of income earners (M40).

"I know the councils are able to absorb all of it but if they cannot afford it, then at least part of it would do.

"At least it helps to reduce the (people's financial) burden. Now people feel like they are hanging [...] let's give them some breathing space," he said.

The GST was implemented on April 1 this year and the federal tax is also imposed for local government services.

To date, five states in the country are absorbing GST for services rendered by local councils.

A month after the implementation of GST, Johor took the lead in announcing that it will absorb the charges and Penang and Terengganu followed suit a day later.

On May 24, Sarawak chief minister Adenan Satem also announced that the state will absorb GST for local government services and the Kelantan government announced a similar measure on May 28.

Selangor is the only state led by the opposition coalition which has not absorb GST charges for local council services.

However, it is also the most populous state and the cost-revenue is expected to be significantly higher compared to other states.
