I have been reading about the high level of road accidents particularly during festive seasons. Year after year, the statistics tell their own story. But the authorities, as usual, respond in what seems the only way they know how when faced with a problem - they scold, ban, prohibit, outlaw and punish as if such emotional and attention-attracting measures are enough to cure all ills.

Why not try to inform, educate, persuade, enforce and convert the motoring public sensitively and constructively? Public information is distinctly lacking. Threats of punishment alone are not enough.

More attention should be paid towards demonstrating good driving habits, reminding drivers to take breaks, teaching people about awareness and to anticipate the actions of fellow road users and other aspects of sound, responsible behaviour on the road.

Scolding is free and takes less time but this should not be an excuse for it to take the place of education and information which take time and money.
