The police have yet toto record former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's statement in connection with his remarks during an appearance at Bersih 4.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar told Malaysiakini that the police would handle this soon.

"We haven't recorded his statement yet. We will make an appointment (to see him) soon," he said.

On Sept 3, Khalid said Mahathir is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code after several Umno division leaders had filed reports.

The police reports concerned his bribery allegations against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

The police chief also said the former premier's statement would be recorded to facilitate investigations.

Prior to this, the police had arrested a former Umno division leader close to Mahathir for filing reports against 1MDB abroad.

Khairuddin Abu Hassan was first arrested under Section 124c for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

He was then freed and rearrested under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) for allegedly attempting to sabotage the nation.

Following this, Mahathir did not rule out the possibility of being detained as well but the police dismissed this.

Nevertheless, the former premier has not backtracked on his scathing attack against Najib, whom he insists must step down.

In Sabah yesterday, Mahathir had accused Najib of theft when dismissing the claim that the RM2.6 billion deposited into the prime minister’s accounts was political donation.

"If you want to arrest me, arrest me, but I want to say that Najib stole money," he had said.
