DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the party will support a vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak if the parliamentary Opposition Leader Wan Azizah Wan Ismail files the motion.

Lim said the motion is very important and needs to be filed by the opposition leader to give due weight to the motion against the embattled PM.

“The opposition leader is supported by all the opposition parties, so to be frank, our MPs have also tried to file it but when we told them this type of motion should be filed by the opposition leader, they withdrew theirs,” Lim said.

He told reporters this after attending the signing ceremony of the German Dual Training Programme between PSDC and the industry in Penang.

“We feel it is not a trivial or petty matter, something very important to the country, and to give it due weight it should be filed by the opposition leader," he stressed.

“Of course, for those who do not want to respect that, it is up to them.

“As far as DAP is concerned, we feel that the proper person to file the motion is the opposition leader, and she is supported by all,” Lim added.

Lim said DAP has not discussed the matter with its allies because PKR is having its own discussions first.

“Let the discussions mature, it should be done with full consultation and I do not want to pre-empt the matter by making more comments about it,” said the Penang chief minister.

It is learnt that PKR will go ahead with the no-confidence vote against Najib within the first week of Parliament, which begins proceedings on Oct 19.

The party will reportedly do it alone as they have failed to obtain the agreement of its allies, Amanah, DAP, and PAS.

PKR will either file an emergency motion on the matter or rally its allies to defeat Najib, by not voting when he tables the 2016 Budget on Oct 23.

With only 88 out of 222 representatives in the Dewan Rakyat, the opposition pact which has renamed itself Pakatan Harapan, does not have the majority to push for a no-confidence vote against Najib.

Pakatan Harapan, which does not include PAS, only has 72 MPs.

PAS may not support the move, given its president Abdul Hadi Awang’s remark that the party will only defeat Najib via “healthy” means.
