Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that Jalan Alor in Bukit Bintang and its surrounding areas in the capital city are safe.

This comes after the United States issued a terrorism threat warning for the downtown street, famed for its hawker food stalls, last week.

Three people were subsequently arrested for being suspected security threats.

“I want to confirm that that specific areas and several others categorised as dangerous, are under strict police monitoring.

“We want to assure the public that police are ready for any terror threat. We will take all measures to ensure such problems can be overcome,” he told reporters today.

Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, said this on the sidelines of the 10th Asean Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) in Kuala Lumpur.

He added Malaysian authorities had before this received intelligence report from several sources, including the United States, over security in the area.

“We thank international intelligence agencies for their input (so we can be) more careful in ensuring there is no terrorism threat in any part of Malaysia,” he said.

He also urged the public to alert the authorities if they encounter anything suspicious.
