Malay NGO Coalition chairperson Jamal Md Yunos was arrested tonight at the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters after giving a statement.

He was immediately brought to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters under Section 105 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC), ahead of tomorrow's rally at Petaling Street.

His arrest was confirmed by Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Zainuddin Ahmad.

"(Jamal) was detained under section 105 of the CPC to prevent offences from happening. It is regarding his statement that there is going to be a riot on Petaling Street tomorrow," Zainuddin said in a WhatsApp message.

Section 105 of the CPC confers the police powers to detain anyone, without warrant or court order, to prevent a seizable offence from being committed.

Jamal ( photo ), who is also the Sungai Besar Umno division chief, was arrested at about 8.50pm.

Following Jamal's arrest, his personal secretary Duranny Izam said Jamal may have been detained under the Sedition Act.

"It is understood he was detained to help investigations under the Sedition Act. We were told he is at Dang Wangi IPD now.

"However, we have not been given full information regarding the arrest and when he will be freed," he said in a statement.

He added that Jamal’s legal team, headed by Suzana Norlihan, will send updates on the situation from time to time.

On Wednesday, Jamal warned of a possible riot tomorrow if the authorities failed to act on traders who sell counterfeit goods.

However, today he disowned his role in the protest.

Earlier today, Bernama reported that deputy inspector-general of police Noor Rashid Ibrahim said Jamal will be called to Dang Wangi district police headquarters regarding the Petaling Street rally tomorrow.

Ali Tinju: Tomorrow's rally cancelled

Meanwhile, Malaysian Armed Forces Veteran Association president Mohd Ali Baharom said tomorrow's rally has been cancelled, following advice from the authorities.

Speaking to The Malaysian Insider , Mohd Ali ( photo ), also known as Ali Tinju, admitted to being the organiser of the planned rally.

He told the portal the rally organisers would like to give a chance to the authorities to respond to demands that more Malay traders be allowed to conduct business on Petaling Street.

Ali also distanced himself from any gathering held at the popular tourist attraction tomorrow.

"We can't guarantee there won't be a rally tomorrow. If there is, it's not from us," he was quoted saying by the portal.
