The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and police have once again been urged to initiate an investigation into the wealth of Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s children.

In making the call, BN Supporters Association deputy chairperson Lee Nan Sang said the people want to know how the former prime minister's sons Mokhzani and Mirzan became among the richest Malaysians.

"Many are aware of the records concerning the wealth of Mahathir's family, and ask how his two sons accumulated so much of wealth within a short period.

"All the evidence are on social media, just like The Wall Street Journal ," Lee told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

Lee ( photo ) also called on the attorney-general to delve into this issue as well to find out the truth, saying that a detailed explanation is necessary to counter the negative perception that becoming an MP or assemblyperson is a shortcut to becoming rich.

He questioned Mokhzani and Mirzan’s source of wealth, and whether there was graft during Mahathir’s reign.

“If they are very good in running a business, where did the capital come from? Is it that easy to win contracts or international business?

“We are concerned that there may be element of graft or abuse of power when Mahathir was in power,” Lee said.

Mokhzani had previously been named the ninth richest person in Malaysia last year by the Malaysian Business magazine.

To a question on why this matter is raised only now, 12 years after Mahathir had stepped down from the top post, Lee replied:

“Two, three days ago I read in social media that many are asking how did Mahathir’s children get their wealth. They want an explanation.”

Gathering evidence

When asked whether he has proof of wrongdoing, Lee said his group is still gathering evidence, and once ready, they will lodge a report with the MACC.

To a question whether the move is a response to Mahathir’s staunch criticism of current premier Najib Abdul Razak, Lee said he only wants to clear up the confusion afflicting the people.

“We know that Mahathir ( photo ) had been in power for (22 years) and of late, he claims to have failed in his administration.

“I don’t think that is an excuse for him to criticise someone. Our supporters’ association feel that we need to clear up the confusion and that we should give an explanation to the people. The people want to know the truth,” he said.

On another matter, Lee also urged BN component parties to be careful in issuing statements, saying that the coalition cannot afford to make any mistakes, lest it becomes targeted by the opposition.

“When a party resorts to a boycott or any other action to another party, it gives the Opposition the chance to fight back and we become a target due to the lack of mutual understanding in BN.

“BN parties should remember the spirit at the time when BN was founded,” he said, when commenting on Pasir Gudang MCA Youth’s move to cut ties with Najib who is BN chairperson, on Sept 16.

He said he hoped each BN party would consult among themselves first before issuing any statement.
