PKR is still hopeful despite the rejection by PAS to attend the former's invitation to a roundtable discussion on the formation of a new opposition coalition.

"As the opposition leader, I invited them (for the discussion). If they plan not to come, the invitation is still open," she told reporters after a forum held in Kuala Lumpur today.

Wan Azizah was responding to PAS Ulama wing chief Mahfodz Mohamed who had stressed that the Islamist party was not ready to participate in a roundtable discussion with DAP and PAS splinter group Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah).

The Permatang Pauh MP on Thursday had said that the roundtable discussion , will be to talk about issues the opposition parties had to agree upon before they can form a new coalition.

The new coalition will take into account every party's opinions to fight for a Malaysia that is fair, inclusive and harmonious, she had said.

She had invited DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang ( photo ), PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Mohamad Sabu, along with several NGO leaders and prominent figures such as Saifuddin Abdullah and Simon Sipaun.

Meanwhile, on another matter, Wan Azizah confirmed that they definitely needed the numbers to defeat BN, therefore, rationalising the need of having PAS in the new opposition coalition.

"Our system is first past the post. To win the elections, we need everybody that is actually together on the common platform.

"In this case we have been segmented [...] If we are together, then the majority wins," she said.

The opposition leader's response came as she was asked to comment if she had to rely on the support base from PAS because she had no confidence in new party Amanah.
