Samy: Gua Tempurung stretch may re-open before Xmas

He said Projek Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan (Plus), the North-South Expressway concessionaire, had initially proposed to close the lanes for three months but had now brought forward to Dec 23.
"Work is progressing on schedule. From what I see today, repair work can be completed earlier than scheduled. I will announce the actual opening date later," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
Samy Vellu, accompanied by Malaysian Highway Authority Director-General George George, was briefed by Plus Expressway Bhd senior general manager Nik Airina Nik Jaafar.
The south-bound lane was closed for three months after the mudslide at Km303 as three of the 16 cross-beams of the bridge spanning a river at the site were damaged. The north-bound lane was made a contra lane.
Samy Vellu said the three new cross-beams, being built now, would be launched on Nov 22.
He said work to push the beams to their original place under the bridge, which had moved due to pounding of the boulders, had been completed.
Traffic movements at the expressway currently limited to two contra lanes on the north-bound site would have an additional north-bound lane which would be opened at 9pm tonight, he said.
Holiday traffic
Samy Vellu said the closed right lane on the bridge in the south-bound side would be open to motorists to ease congestion as close to 750,000 vehicles a day would be on the expressway for Deepavali on Nov 11 and Hari Raya Aidilfitri three days later.
To cope with the vehicles returning to Kuala Lumpur after the two festive holidays, there would be two contra lanes to the south and one to north, he said.
Samy Vellu said he expected travelling to be smooth on the expressway during the festive season as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) had barred heavy vehicles from the expressway during the period.
"I urge motorists returning to their hometowns during the festive break to be extra careful while driving, taking into account the road condition, don't drive fast and see to the safety of others," he added.
