DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said PKR must explain why it needs to continue to work with PAS in a new coalition.

Lim said if PKR deputy president Azmin Ali can continue to work with PAS inspite of its changed policies, the people need to know why.

By changed policies, Lim ( photo ) was referring to the possibility of PAS members joining the looming red-shirt rally by pro-Umno NGOs on Sept 16 in Kuala Lumpur as the party has not totally rejected the event.

“DAP’s stand is crystal clear that the party cannot cooperate with PAS because the Islamic party has severed ties with DAP in June,” said the Penang Chief Minister.

PAS decided to cut ties with DAP as the party strongly opposed to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s move to table amendments to the hudud law to allow its implementation in Kelantan.

“PAS had also taken the initiative to decide to contest all seats dominated by DAP in the coming national polls, Lim added.

“They have shown they want to be foes not friends with DAP, they prefer to fight us than BN or Umno,” Lim said at a press conference in Komtar today.

“PAS is now closer to BN and Umno, in that we no longer fight for the same issues like the 1MDB scandal.

“PAS has also shown it is not protesting against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s RM2.6 billion donations deposited in his private bank accounts as they did not join the Bersih rally,” he added.

DAP only willing to work with Amanah

Lim was asked to comment on the Selangor menteri besar's remark that PKR will accept PAS in a new coalition despite opposition from DAP.

He added that DAP was only willing to work with PAS splinter party, Parti Amanah Negara, led by close ally Mohamad Sabu ( photo ).

It was reported that Amanah had also made a stand to welcome PAS in the new opposition coalition, although it was supposed to replace PAS when 18 of its progressive leaders including Mohamad formed Amanah.

Lim said he was open to discussions on the matter as PKR and its president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is a close ally, and the party is a strong supporter of jailed PKR defacto leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Asked if DAP would then prefer to go alone in the coming polls if PAS joins the new opposition pact, Lim said “this is something we have to think about”.

“We have to take it step-by-step and discuss a formula for cooperation in the future,” he said.

Asked if the DAP was annoyed with the current situation, Lim remarked that “the country and nation matters, not personal feelings”.
