PAS members who have joined the Malaysian Workers Party will have their membership automatically terminated.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said this when denying the party had sacked the 22 former PAS members who joined the dormant party.

"No, it's not true.

"According to the PAS constitution, any PAS member who joins another political party will have his or her membership automatically terminated. This is based by virtue of clause 15 of the PAS constitution.

"If it is true that these 22 people have joined the Malaysian Workers Party then their membership cease with immediate effect," he said.

"That's all, we didn't sack them or come out with a letter or anything," he added.

Takiyuddin ( photo ) explained that according to the party constitution, the membership of members will be terminated through three ways; if a member resigns from the party, is sacked from the party or declares leaving the party due to joining another party.

The Kota Bharu MP pointed out how the Malaysian Workers Party was already registered as a political party.

"Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) is not registered, that is why we didn't say anything even though some declared having posts in it.

"For the Workers Party, any PAS member who joins the party will have his or her membership automatically terminated," he reiterated.

GHB yesterday announced that it would take over the Malaysian Workers Party and rename it as Parti Amanah Negara.

The Malaysian Workers Party was established in 1978 by Ganga Nayar, the first female to head a political party in Malaysia. The party's only electoral outing was during the 1978 general election.

Mat Sabu is slated to head the new party's pro-tem committee with Salahuddin Ayub as his deputy and Ahmad Awang as adviser.

Meanwhile,Salahuddin ( photo ), who is also a former PAS vice president, confirmed that joining another party would lead to the automatic revocation of membership.

"But I don't know whether any official statement has been issued.

"We don't really mind, anyway. When we announced to join this new party, we lose our membership automatically," he said.
