The police have been urged to provide updates of investigations on Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's claim that there was a plot to "topple" the government.

In a press release today, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said that it has been 10 days since Ahmad Zahid made the allegation and there has been no updates since.

Lim said that inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar should disclosed if there was a plot to topple the elected government by violent or unconstitutional means and the number of people arrested.

Should Ahmad Zahid's claim be baseless, Lim said Khalid should clear the air as well.

"Malaysians will like to know whether the police have found any basis for Ahmad Zahid's claim [...] and if there is no basis whatsoever to Zahid's so-called ' intelligence reports '," said Lim.

Should Ahmad Zahid's claim be false, Lim said the police must take action against him or at least issue a public reprimand.

Answers in Parliament?

Lim said that if Khalid refused to answer these questions now, he will have to do so once the next Dewan Rakyat session begins in October.

"If he is not prepared to answer this question now, he cannot avoid it when Parliament meets in mid-October," said Lim.

Lim added that should there be a peaceful, democratic and constitutional attempt to change the prime minister and government, the police should be independent not allow any efforts to stop this process.

Ahmad Zahid had been repeatedly claiming that there was a plot to secure statutory declarations from BN and opposition MPs to claim that they have the majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.

He claimed that the mastermind was an "old man" from Umno who is also a serving MP.

However, Ahmad Zahid has been scant on further details, prompting criticisms as the situation had prompted suspicion and finger pointing among party members.
