Police has identified one suspect involved in splashing yellow paint , and marking several spot with ‘4.0’ around the city’s Unesco heritage site, defacing one of Penang’s most popular murals.

‘4.0’ marks the coalition for clean and fair elections Bersih's fourth mega-rally in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 29 and 30.

George Town OCPD Mior Faridalatrash Wahid, who visited the mural site yesterday evening, said the police is investigating the case under section 427 of the penal code for vandalism.

“We are currently looking at the CCTV footage and will soon arrest the suspect,” Mior Faridalatrash told Malaysiakini when contacted.

Mior Faridalatrash said police have only received one report from a Penang Island City Council officer on the incident.

He added that the recording clearly showed the guy, who wore a shirt with orange, red, white and blue colours, spraying the yellow paint.

However, Mior Faridalatrash declined to comment whether this incident is related to Bersih 4 rally.

CCTV captured car number plate

It is also learnt that CCTV footage by a shop owner in Armenian Street had captured the appearance of the suspect and his car number plate.

The shop owner will lodge a police report soon.

One of the sites which were marred by the yellow paint is the world famous ‘Little Children on a Bicycle’ mural on Armenian Street which was painted by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic in April 2012.

According to Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, a wire sculpture, two shops and a car parked by the roadside were also vandalised with yellow paint.

Bersih northern region coordinator Toh Kin Woon deemed the desecration as "sabotage" against the electoral watchdog’s efforts to organise the 34-hour mammoth rally.

Toh, a former state executive councillor in the Penang government, denied Bersih’s involvement in the incident, saying that the organisation only held peaceful activities leading up to the rally at the end of the month.
