Deputy inspector-general of police Noor Rashid Ibrahim today brushed aside claims that there were hidden hands behind the police investigation of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

"As far as I am concerned, it is our prerogative," he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

He was asked to respond to MACC special operations director Bahri Mohamad Zin ( photo ) who said the police wouldn't do "crazy work" unless there were " hidden hands " instructing them.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar is currently in Jakarta attending the Aseanapol (Asean police organisations) meeting.

Several MACC investigators probing SRC International have been quizzed and detained by police while their homes and offices were raided.

The RM42 million allegedly deposited into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank accounts originated from SRC International.

Focussing on information leak

Noor Rashid refused to elaborate further on Bahri's accusation.

He also insisted that police investigations against MACC will not disrupt the graftbuster's own probe as cops are only focussing on confidential information leak.

This is despite MACC deputy chief commissioner Mustafar Ali ( photo ) stating that the police's move had disrupted its investigation as their investigators' equipment such as laptops have been confiscated by police.

“Our focus is only on the leak of secret documents […] other issues are of no concern to us. The MACC can continue with their investigation, and we shall continue with ours.

“We will not interfere. We respect the MACC and the powers vested upon them,” Noor Rashid said.

He also added that civil servants should not leak information because this is an offence.

“The findings of the investigation will only be revealed in court after charges have been made, and not before the charging,” Noor Rashid said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed ( photo ) who was also present at the press conference said he does not want to comment on the issue, and instead left Noor Rashid to respond.

“I leave it to police to perform their job. I don’t want to interfere in police work,” he said.
