The verdict on the long-standing former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo corruption case at the Federal Court will be delivered before the end of the month.

This was confirmed by Chief Justice Arifin Zakaria, when met after he launched the Magna Carta Commonwealth Charter, today.

"I think a decision will be made before the end of the month," he said.

This was also confirmed by Chief Judge of Malaya, Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin who is leading the bench in hearing the appeal.

"Yes, the decision will be made within this month and the parties will be informed," he said briefly while accompanying Justice Arifin out.

Come Aug 19, it will be exactly seven months and counting for the Federal Court to deliver its decision on Mohd Khir's appeal against his conviction.

Federal Court judge Justice Tan Kok Wha, who is one of the five judges who sat in the panel, was supposed to retire on May 16 but was granted a six-month extension, and is now entering the third month of the extension period.

Judges are supposed to retire after they attain the maximum age of 66, but their term can extended by a limited period of six months.

Chief Judge of Malaya Justice Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin is leading the five-member bench that heard the appeal on Jan 19.

The other judges besides Justice Zulkefli and Justice Tan were Federal Court judges Ahmad Ma'arop, Hasan Lah and Ramly Ali.

Khir, formerly Sungai Panjang assemblyperson, was convicted for corruption by the High Court in Shah Alam on Dec 23, 2011, for obtaining two lots of land and a house at No 8 & 10, Jalan Suasa 7/1L for himself and his wife Zahrah Kechik, from Ditamas Sdn Bhd director Shamsuddin Hayroni, at RM3.5 million - a price much lower than the RM6.5 million Ditamas paid for it in 2004.

The Court of Appeal upheld Khir's conviction and sentence of 12 months' jail on May 30, 2013, and the forfeiture of the property.

Khir was represented by a team of lawyers in his appeal to the Federal Court, including Umno-linked lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, M Athimulan and Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin, while senior DPP Mohd Masri Daud represented the prosecution.

Previously, Chief Justice Arifin Zakaria issued a directive that all court judgments, including those from the superior courts, will have to be delivered within three months.

The top judicial officer in the country explained that the standard practice for the Court of Appeal and Federal Court was to complete their judgment within three months of the case being heard.

"But in some cases, the courts (the Court of Appeal and Federal Court) would take a longer time, may be six months to complete the judgment. It depends on the complexity of the case," the CJ had said.
