An Umno lawmaker has called on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to clarify the status of the special task force’s investigation on 1MDB.

With the termination of former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail on Monday and the cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday, Abdul Aziz Sheikh Fadzir ( photo ) said the series of events give a negative public perception.

"We are all worried about the institutions […] We all know that he (Abdul Gani) was conducting investigations, and there is talk that it is reaching its final stages. This gives a negative impression towards the government.

"I hope the Yang Amat Berhormat (Najib) would explain the status of the 1MDB investigation by the task force," added the Kulim-Bandar Bahru MP.

The task force comprises the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Bank Negara Malaysia, while the Attorney-General's Chambers is in charge of prosecuting those implicated in the investigation.

Najib himself is caught in the crisis, as it has been alleged that RM2.6 billion of 1MDB funds had been channelled into his personal bank account. He has denied that public money had been spent for personal use.

On Monday, Najib moved to reshuffle the cabinet, which saw four PAC members from BN including then chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed appointed to ministerial positions, meaning that they would have to relinquish their PAC posts.

The new cabinet also witnessed Muhyiddin Yassin dropped as deputy prime minister and Shafie Apdal as rural and regional development minister - both vocal critics of 1MDB.

This led to speculation that the reshuffle and termination of Abdul Gani are aimed at crippling investigations into the 1MBD scandal.

Yesterday, a video recording surfaced in which Muhyiddin told guests at his house that Najib admitted RM2.6 billion was deposited into his personal account.
