Hishammuddin Hussein Onn's statement at the Umno Youth AGM accused Anwar Ibrahim of being a traitor to Umno and to the Malays. Please allow me to highlight a few inconsistencies that I observe arising from his statement:

  1. Hishammuddin's grandfather, the honourable Onn Jaafar, had formed two parties to fight against Umno (the Independence of Malaya Party in 1951 and the National Party in 1954). If Anwar is deemed a traitor for forming Keadilan and Barisan Alternatif, then how do we rate Hishammuddin's own grandfather?

Is Onn Jaafar a bigger traitor than Anwar? Incidently, Hishammuddin's father, Hussein Onn, never registered himself as a member of Umno Baru until his passing.

  2. Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was once sacked from Umno. He then led a student protest against the then incumbent Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al Haj. He also wrote in the international media criticising Tunku and in one by-election (Port Klang), he campaigned for PAS.

He also questioned Tunku's 'Malay-ness'. Can we also say that Mahathir was a traitor as well?

  3. The great Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah's deeds against Umno are well-known facts. Because of Tengku Razaleigh, Umno lost Kelantan in 1990 and never recovered. Can we also say that Tengku Razaleigh is a traitor as well?

It is my suggestion that Hishammuddin take care when making statements and should particularly be wary of inconsistencies that might call his credibility into question.
