PM: Islam Hadhari not a new Muslim 'sect'

Islam Hadhari is not a new teaching as alleged by opposition party PAS, it is a way for Muslims to return to the true path, said Umno president Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today.

"It is not a new teaching nor is it a new mazhab (denomination). Islam Hadhari is an effort to bring the ummah back to basics, back to the fundamentals, as prescribed in the Quran and the Hadith, which form the foundation of the Islamic civilisation," he told the party's 55th general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
In his 90-minute speech, he said the party has never allowed religion to be used as a political tool.
"Umno has always ensured that Islam and Muslims are protected from such abuse of religion," he added.
He said Islam Hadhari is an approach that emphasises on development, consistent with the tenets of Islam and focuses on enhancing the quality of life.
10 principles
He listed 10 main principles under Islam Hadhari, which include faith and piety in Allah, a just and trustworthy government, a free and independent people, mastery of knowledge and balanced and comprehensive economic development.
"These principles have been formulated to ensure that the implementation and approach does not cause any anxiety among any groups or in our multiracial and multireligious country," he said.
He said the principles will also empower Muslims to face the global challenges of today.
"It is complete and comprehensive, with an emphasis on the development of the economy and civilisation, capable of building Malay competitiveness," he added.
Abdullah, who is also prime minister, stressed that the concept of jihad must be given a broader interpretation, covering all aspects of life.
"These include the pursuit of knowledge, the mastery of knowledge, science and technology and economic activities," he added.
No violence
He said jihad should not be misused or misinterpreted to justify terrorism.
"Such actions only serve to tarnish the teachings of Islam. Islam does not permit such violence," he added.
Abdullah said Malaysia as chair of the Organisation of Islamic Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement, should play a bigger role to empower these two global bodies to play a more influential role in global politics.
"We will continue to raise the awareness and understanding of the world on the importance of an international agenda to eradicate poverty globally," he added.
Touching on Malaysia's foreign policy, he said it has always been and will continue to be for the protection and promotion of national interest.
"Malaysia has no ideology to export, and has no secret to carry out anywhere in the world," he added.
